Independence Day is the eve to commemorate the nation's freedom. On 15th August 1947, India achieved freedom from British rule. Since the date is celebrated as the Independence Day of India. The day is observed as a national festival and is treasured with great passion all over the country.

On the 15th of August, in the year 1947, Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru, the first Prime Minister of India, raised the Indian national flag above the Lahori Gate of the Red Fort in Delhi. He further read out the prestigious discourse "Tryst with Destiny"" which declared the freedom of India. This historic moment ended 3 centuries of British rule in India. The nation never again remained the late spring retreat of the British Sahibs.

India's Independence Day is certainly an occasion to celebrate our freedom and to pay respect to all those people who gave their lives for our independence. But there is something more to it, The day also marks the coming together of more than 400 princely states to form one nation - India. Probably, this was the biggest political success of the country.

How is Independence Day celebrated?

Preparations for the Independence Day in Delhi begins a month in advance. All the major roads are festooned with tri-color flags. All the buildings in Delhi, which are of national importance, are illumined. Furthermore, Independence Day is celebrated with flag hoisting ceremonies and cultural programs in Delhi.

The celebrations related to Independence Day include only merrymaking and festivities. Schools and colleges mark the day with cultural activities, flag hoisting, drills and distribution of sweets. The day is celebrated by both the private as well as the Government organizations. The Prime Minister of the country addresses the nation after hoisting the National Flag at the Red Fort. Independence Day is also observed by flying kites by people mainly in Delhi, Various programs are telecasted on the television in this day.
