1) Bharatanatyam previously called Sadira Attam is a major form of Indian classical dance
2) It is originated in Tamil Nadu. Bharatanatyam remained exclusive to Hindu temples through the 19th century 3) The theoretical foundations of Bharatanatyam are found in Natya Shastra, the ancient Hindu text of performance arts.
4) Natya Shastra is attributed to the ancient scholar Bharata Muni, and its 1st compilation is dated to between 200 BCE and 200 CE
5) The most studied version of the Natya Shastra text consists of about 6000 verses structured into 36 chapters.
6) A famous example of the illustrative sculpture is in the Chidambaram temple dedicated to the Hindu god Shiva, where 108 poses of the Bharatnatyam, that are also described as Karanas in the Natya Shastrahare carved in stone.

Every state in the country is specialized in a dance form. There are 8 classical dance forms in India.

Among them, Bharatanatyam is considered to be one of the most important dance forms. Bharatanatyam is originated in Tamil Nadu.

The origin of Bharatanatyam traces back to the Natyashastra, an ancient book written by Bharata Muni. During ancient times Bharatanatyam is a temple dance.

It was a dance usually performed by Devadasis and Nattuvanars. In modern days some of the dancers like Rukmini Devi founded a school of dances (Kalakshetra) and promoted Bharatanatyam. 

Bharatanatyam is traditionally a team performance art that consists of solo dancers accompanied by musicians and one or more singers.
